Flexitarian harm reduction is a better public norm than strict veganism

3 Begründungen11 Quellen

This position argues that public norms should aim for the largest practical reduction in animal consumption rather than for universal adoption of a strict moral identity. In its view, cutting the most harmful and emissions-intensive foods at scale matters more than persuading a smaller group to become perfectly vegan.

Advocates think strict vegan rhetoric can sometimes narrow the coalition unnecessarily. They prefer a standard that welcomes imperfect progress, partly because that tends to fit how people actually change their diets in everyday life.

Begründungen

  1. 1.

Partial reductions can capture much of the climate benefit.

This reason highlights the uneven climate impact of different animal products. Because beef and lamb are disproportionately emissions-intensive, very large gains can come from targeted reductions even if people do not eliminate every form of animal consumption. That makes the climate argument more fine-grained than a simple vegan-versus-non-vegan binary. The best public strategy may be the one that moves the largest number of diets away from the most damaging foods first.

  2. 2.

    Broad compliance beats narrow purity.

This reason is consequentialist in tone. It asks whether a norm that many people can follow imperfectly might do more real-world good than a norm that only a smaller committed minority can sustain fully. The claim is not that ideals are useless, but that public standards should be judged partly by uptake. A less absolute message may move more households, restaurants, and institutions in practice.

  3. 3.

Public norms should leave room for ethical diversity.

This reason accepts that people can share many concerns about animal welfare, climate, or health while still disagreeing about what moral conclusion follows. Some will see full veganism as required; others will see serious reduction as sufficient. Its defenders think a pluralist public norm can hold that tension more honestly, especially in diverse societies where people face different constraints and rank competing values differently.
