Should the Fed raise interest rates again?

3 Positionen4 Quellen

Worum es bei dieser Frage geht

US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year to September 2026, up from 3.4% in August. More than half of the monthly increase came from gasoline, which is about a third more expensive than a year ago after the war with Iran disrupted global energy supplies. In September the Federal Reserve raised its key rate for the first time in three years, to 3.75–4.00%, and markets see its next decision, on 28 October, as close to a coin flip.

The disagreement is about what kind of inflation this is. If rising fuel costs are starting to spread into wages, rents and services, waiting could let inflation settle in. If it is mainly a temporary supply shock, higher rates would slow an already weak job market without making fuel any cheaper. The report was also the last before the 3 November midterm elections, which adds political pressure on every side.

  • Hold and look through the fuel shock

The Fed keeps its rate at 3.75–4.00% and only raises it again if inflation outside food and energy keeps climbing.

    Am besten belegte Begründung

Higher interest rates don’t produce more oil or diesel, so they can’t fix a price spike caused by war.

  • Rates are the wrong tool: fix the fuel supply

The Fed stays put, and the response to rising prices comes from energy policy instead: new fuel supply, reserve releases and relief for the sectors hit hardest.

  • Raise rates again in October

The Fed raises its target range by at least a quarter point at its meeting ending 28 October, as most officials signalled in September.

    Am besten belegte Begründung
